FDM printer extruding filament

FDM Prototyping

Best all-around process for large parts and quick iteration. Build volumes up to 360 × 360 × 360 mm with visible layer lines you can sand or leave as-is.

  • Layer heights 0.1 – 0.3 mm
  • Tolerance ±0.3 mm or ±0.5%
  • Typical turnaround 24 – 48 hours
  • Starting price $24 per part
PLA PETG ABS ASA TPU
SLA resin printed parts with smooth surfaces

SLA Resin Prototyping

When surface finish and fine detail matter more than brute strength. Ideal for dental models, jewelry masters, miniatures, and parts with features under 0.5 mm.

  • Layer heights 0.025 – 0.1 mm
  • Tolerance ±0.1 mm
  • Typical turnaround 24 – 36 hours
  • Starting price $32 per part
Standard resin Tough resin Flexible resin Castable resin
SLS printed nylon parts

SLS Nylon Prototyping

No supports, no visible layer lines, and full mechanical strength. The go-to process for interlocking assemblies, snap fits, and living hinges right off the printer.

  • Layer heights 0.08 – 0.12 mm
  • Tolerance ±0.15 mm
  • Typical turnaround 3 – 5 days
  • Starting price $48 per part

What Actually Happens After You Upload

No black box. Here is the exact sequence your prototype goes through, with real timestamps from a typical Standard-tier order placed at 11:00 am on a Tuesday.

11:00 am

File received

You upload the STL. Our system logs it and queues it for review.

12:42 pm

Quote sent

An engineer reviews geometry, orientation, and supports. You get pricing with the print time breakdown.

1:15 pm

Approval and print start

You approve the quote. The part moves to a bay and starts printing within 30 minutes.

Next day, 9:20 am

Printed and inspected

Print finishes overnight. We remove supports, measure critical features, and photograph the part.

Next day, 11:00 am

Shipped

Packed, labeled, and handed to the carrier with tracking emailed to you. Total elapsed time: 24 hours.

What Teams Use Rapid Prototyping For

A small sample of jobs that came through the shop in the last 90 days.

01

Form and fit checks

Validate that a new enclosure actually closes, that buttons line up with PCB pads, and that the device feels right in the hand before committing to tooling.

Consumer electronics
02

Investor and trade-show demos

Presentation-grade parts with sanded surfaces and matched color, ready for a pitch or a booth where the prototype has to look finished.

Startups
03

Jigs and fixtures

Custom alignment tools and test fixtures printed overnight for a production line that cannot afford to wait a week for a machined version.

Manufacturing
04

Surgical planning models

Patient-specific anatomy models printed from CT scans for pre-surgical rehearsal and patient consultation.

Medical
05

Concept models

Ten variants of the same part printed in different colors and layer heights for a design review the next morning.

Industrial design
06

Replacement prototypes

Legacy parts that broke and no longer exist, modeled and reprinted so the equipment can go back online.

Five Checks Before Your Part Ships

Every prototype goes through the same QC routine, whether it is a single part or a full build plate.

  1. 01

    Visual inspection

Layer adhesion, warping, stringing, and surface defects caught under bright bench lighting.

  2. 02

    Dimensional check

Critical features measured with digital calipers against your drawing or the model's nominal dimensions.

  3. 03

    Support removal and cleanup

Supports removed cleanly, contact points sanded, and any residual stringing trimmed.

  4. 04

    Photograph on record

Every part photographed on a neutral background from three angles and attached to your order file.

  5. 05

    Pack and seal

Wrapped in foam, boxed, and sealed with a QC sticker initialed by the technician who inspected it.

Rapid Prototyping FAQ

Files received and approved before 2:00 pm Pacific Time on a business day qualify for next-day shipping on the Standard tier. Anything after that moves to the following business day unless you upgrade to Fast or Rush.

Yes. Upload as many STL or STEP files as you like. Each variant is priced individually and printed on its own build plate so cross-contamination between versions never happens.

Yes. Minor non-manifold edges, flipped normals, and small holes are repaired free of charge. Larger repair jobs that need remodeling are quoted at $95 per hour and always approved by you before we start.

No. We run FDM, SLA, and SLS processes only. For metal prototyping, we can help you spec the part and refer you to a trusted partner shop, but the print itself is done elsewhere.

Yes. Local pickup is available at 2150 Market Street, Suite 340, San Francisco, during shop hours. Choose “Pickup” at checkout and we will email you when the part is ready.

We can achieve ±0.05 mm on specific features with SLA and a dedicated setup. Book a call to discuss it and we will tell you honestly whether the geometry supports that tolerance before you pay.
